Anthem (1938) is basically a dystopia whereby the Russian-American novelist, Ayn Rand, indirectly defends the values of individualism, ambition and creativity. The narrative imagines humanity in an age of irrationality and totalitarian obscurantism where human beings are no longer allowed to be different or creative and where individualism is a serious crime that deserves capital punishment. Society in Anthem depends wholly on collectivism and socialistic rules. Individuals are prohibited from taking individual actions and even singular personal pronouns are forbidden to be pronounced. The novel’s protagonist is named Equality 7-2521. Despite being brought up in the town’s institutionalized milieu, he represents the figure of the rebel who tends to defy social rules by illegally making friends and falling in love with Liberty 5-3000. His untamed curiosity pushes him one day to transgress the rules and explore a subway tunnel to discover that the tunnel dates back to the “Unmentionable Times” which have preceded the foundation of Anthem’s society. His adventures lead him to the rediscovery of electricity and light. When Equality is caught and imprisoned by the council, he manages to flee to the “Uncharted Forest.” He later discovers that he has been followed by his beloved Liberty. They decide to live in a house from the “Unmentionable Times” and discover together the pleasures of individuality.

I bought this as a gift for my dad, who loves Ayn Rand and read this book to me as a child (lol.) He's usually so hard to buy for, and I just know he is going to LOVE this! It's in all black and white, which is fine although I do wish there was a little color, but it's so cute. I haven't actually read it yet, just flipped through it before I wrapped it up for my dad, but I'm very happy with this find. And it arrived at my house fairly quickly as well.Product details

The Anthem By Ayn Rand edition by Ayn Rand Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I'm biased and love objectivism and the writtings of Rand. With that said I was a little put off that this novel was not in color. I don't often read graphic novels so I could be off base but I seem to remember them in color like a fancy comic book. I still loved the story and it has now taken it's place on my Rand Shelf.
I was so excited to receive this book and share it with my students who read Anthem. Unfortunately, that excitement disappeared after I saw the word "I" in the story when the protagonist, Equality, hasn't even discovered the word yet. This ruins the book entirely. Until the publisher corrects this major error, I would not advise anyone to purchase this graphic novel.
Got this for my husband and he loves it...don't think he had seen it before.
So glad I found it for him.
It's a good adaptation of Anthem; my children were fascinated with the story. It gets them thinking; hopefully they will read the novel when they are older.
Excellent transition from the written story to the graphic. Though, like all such transitions, the fully written Anthem is superior in that it allows for more imaginative interaction with the story.
I bought this book for my grandson (now nine years old) as an introduction to the theme of individualism vs. collectivism. It was originally written as a novelette and shouldn't tax the patience of a young person who is becoming aware of life's values and principles for living.
The setting is the future where there is no personal pronoun "I"; everyone thinks in terms of the collective, using the word "we," following the dictates of strict laws and council edicts, and so the world has reverted to a primitive, tribal existence.
One man dares to think for himself, discovers relics of a technological past, and re-invents the light bulb. Thinking to benefit his brothers, he is denounced and flees to the wilderness.
The hero is an inspiring example for young minds and demonstrates the importance of the individual in human life.
I have read all of Ayn Rand’s books in the past many years ago; however, when I saw that Anthem by Ayn Rand is now in a graphic novel version I immediately purchased it. This was one of her earlier and the shortest novel she has written. The theme of this story can be grasped by anyone with an ounce of common sense, even though common sense isn’t so common these days.
This story about a society that is completely totalitarian (Socialist/Collectivist etc.) where it is a crime to think individually in anyway. They refer to everything in the third person “WE” and are placed in one type of job and cannot associate with anyone in another profession. They do not even have normal names but call themselves “we” with a number. The hero in this story is Equality 7-2521. He discovers a secret underground entrance and realizes he must keep it a secret because it is forbidden to seek out knowledge from the past. He would be punished if they find out he knows about this ancient lost knowledge.
This 132 page graphic novel really makes the story come alive and shows clearly the importance of individual freedom to a creative mind. It demonstrates the evil of all kinds of collectivism and what their true goal is in the end.
If you are an Ayn Rand and Objectivism fan this graphic novel is a must read. If you are a person who wants to see the difference between a free society and a slave society you should check out this book.
