4/5 StarsSo this book was phenomenal, but at the same time I kinda disliked it. The writing style captivated me. It was not a YA novel in any sense. Hard-core adult in nature, Sheri-Lynn brings you into the world of the Dracones. They are a race of dragon beings that are hunted by the Ilyium. That is all of the plot I shall describe, simply because the rest needs to be read in it's entirety.
Though her writing style kept me reading, there were so many themes of abuse. I understood some of it... but after a while, it seemed like every character was going to be raped, tortured, etc. or had already been. I do not believe that there needed to be so much of that. Some of it was reiterated as characters discovered these horrible actions, but it was a constant theme.
However, that is the only off-putting part of this novel. Unless you don't like major sexual tension and graphic sex scenes. Because it seriously got raunchy at the end-although it took a while to come. Haha sex joke... I'll see myself out.
I digress... as I mentioned earlier, Sheri-Lynn is not a YA writer. This allows for her to create fully formed adult characters that you can connect with. Though they are magical in nature, they are also still trying to grow into who they are. The reader is able to create beings you either care about, or that you simply loathe. And yes, there are several loath-able characters.
Overall, it was a fantastic read. Rather intrigued about what the next book will hold.

Holy Dragon Scales!
Okay, before I let all that's gone on cloud my mind I need to say thank you to thank the author for gifting me a copy of Dracones Awakening to read in exchange for an honest review. Secondly, I fecking loved every word on every page! Ha. Totally in love with Jax, Teirney and Sami! Though, I love Jax the most. Lol
It's taken me a few days, okay, a week or so to write this review because... I am still in Dragon hangover. Seriously. I can't stress just how much awesome this story has in it.
It's a hurricane blowing through your mind...
It leaves you windblown, mind blown and in a state of.. holy hell I need the next book now!
I mean, dude.. its just awesome sauce!
Three Dragons, a wolf pack, a scared Kitty and a helluva lot of emotions make this one fantastic story! I am a HUGE Dragon fan and I can say to date, this is one of the BEST story I have read. Not taking away from the others but that is my honest opinion. The action, the emotions and the level of chaos are well balanced. The characters -though there were times where I wanted to put a boot in a certain blue Dragons arse - were well rounded.
Tierney, Jax and Sami are all thick as thieves. Tierney is bad to the bone. A crotch rocket riding, boot wearing, ass kicking woman who can hang with the boys. She does not let anything get in her way... and at times that dedication to living the way they do puts her in danger. Good thing she has Sami and Jax to keep her from getting.. dead. Jax, my poor Jaxsaron, is a broken dragon who thinks he isn't good enough for the love he knows Tierney has for him. Thankfully, she doesn't let him get too far into his head and pushes him at every turn. Jax is a good man -never mind the being broken- all he needs is to open up and let Tierney love him the way he deserves, for the first time in his life. Then, we have Sami. Dear, sweet, protective Samarias. I totally want to hug him. Big teddy bear that will light your butt on fire if you mess with Tierney or Jax. he might be the 'little' brother but he sure has a heart the size of Texas. His willingness to help both Tierney and Jax out in a jam.
When they all go on the hunt for Tierney's missing father, Zander, who happens to be a fallen angel they come across a whole lot of chaos that leads them to ask more and more questions. They also rescue a shifty shifter names Thaniel, who has been through so much. He is broken, run down and totally worms his way into your heart. As he grows closer to Tierney, there is a bond that happens. You can see him slowly starting to come around. As with Jax and Sami it helps him to be around her and her calming touch. But he can also be fierce when pushed too far. that animalistic side of him is what helps keep Tierney's father, Zander safe after a daring rescue. The hurt, bloodshed and desperation to survive sends them all into a tailspin that sets off a new chain of events.
Once broken this chain will forever change them all... question is... can they survive what is to come next or will they all go up in a fiery blaze?
DNF - I had high hopes for this book (come on, it's dragons!), but at 32% (per app), I couldn't go on anymore. I was even looking for excuses to not read! The cover art is the only good thing I can mention & probably had a big influence on me wanting to read this book. This book starts with dropping you in the middle, I felt like I missed a prequel or that this was book 2, since there's really not much for world building or character development going on in that first 32% (that's about a third of the book!). Nothing about the characters spoke to me or made me like or care about what happens to them.
The part that I did read was so repetitive, full of grammatical/spelling/punctuation errors as well as sentences that were incomplete or made no sense, conflicting statements, & hard to follow dialogue. These errors alone made the reading choppy, with having to backtrack & try to interpret what the author intended for meaning. There were so many unanswered questions that would have helped tie things together better (for examples- if Sami is physically bigger than Jax, why did Jax take the punishments from their father to protect Sami? Or why are they the same age, but not called twins or have an explanation of having different mothers or something? & why introduce Serena for the brief bit but not explain more of who/what she was or why she was targeting Jax?).
Then there's the character self loathing- enough already, quit beating the dead dragon, we get it!! (every time Jax thinks/talks, it's self loathing & how unworthy he is to have her love) From what I read there's really no story other than she wants him but she thinks he doesn't want her; he wants her but doesn't think he deserves her. It felt like high school drama, no way do I want to re-live those horrible years of emotional angst! This is not a YA story so don't give us YA type of high school emotional drama but treat the rest of the story as adult reading. I think the first thing this author should do is get an editor (or fire one) & maybe get some beta readers to help sort out issues & decide if it's going to be YA or adult reading, then stick with that.
